View Full Version : Really strange problem with a Nub Habano

(First off, I sent an email through the contact form before I saw that these forums existed, but this seems like a much better way to get in contact with the people behind Nub, so I decided to post here.)

I am posting to inform you of a serious issue I encountered with a Nub Habano cigar.

While going through my cigars and carefully inspecting them for mold, I discovered a one-inch-long piece of soft black plastic inside a Nub Habano. Apparently it had been rolled in with the tobacco. Had I not been paying particular attention to the foot of each cigar, or if the plastic had been further in the cigar, I never would have noticed it (though I imagine that upon smoking it the smell and taste of burning plastic would have given me cause to believe that something was wrong).

The plastic seems similar to plastic used for wire-coating.

Here is a (blurry cellphone) picture:

I won't have access to a decent camera until much later tonight, at which point I will take a better picture.

I'm a fan of Oliva cigars (though I have not smoked a Nub yet), so this was rather shocking to find. While there is obviously some disappointment, I am really more curious about how it got there than angry about it being there. I suppose it would have been different if I had found it by smoking the cigar though.

I have seem similar things happen in other Brand cigars. Here is a link to the Stogie Review, there is an article about it there

http://www.stogiereview.com/08/04/2008/that-cigar-came-with-a-prize/

I will let Sammy know about this thread.

Welcome first to the site and sorry to hear of your problem--

That's weird. Whatever it is, it probably inadvertantly became stuck to a leaf and upon rolling the cigar, just never fell off.

matt257: Thank you for the reply. Very interesting link.

function: Haha. Yeah, it would have been awful to light up the cigar with the plastic inside. I think this may be the first time that finding mold on a cigar was actually a good thing (finding mold on another cigar is what spurred me to carefully examine all the cigars in my humidor. Thankfully, all the other cigars were mold-free.)

tobacmon: Thank you

ronhoffman2: Yeah. I imagine it was something like that.

I received an email from Jose Oliva today, and I am sending in the cigar and the plastic. Hopefully they will be able to figure out what it is.

I am really happy with how Oliva handled this. A lesser company might have brushed it off or ignored me, but Oliva seems to want to get to the bottom of how this happened.

Well, actually I was a bit drunk and first thought it WAS a cigar with claro wrapper (you know, in Miami everything's possible). Paid the guy 10 bucks, took it, wanted to light up, only to find out it's the price for having a picture with it :D

Funny how easy it is to part someone who had drank to much with his money isn't it?

Well, first I'll say Welcome to the site and the world of Nub. Please don't judge Nub cigars on this one bad experience, as it is a complete fluke. I greatly enjoy the Nubs I have smoked thus far, all plastic free, and all delicious. I think you'll enjoy your first Habano, as they are my favorite, but be sure to try the Connies and Cammies because they are both very good cigars as well. I hope you venture through the site, there's a lot on here, much to learn, many friends to be made, and tons of laughs. Enjoy!

I'm definitely not judging Nub based on that experience. I know that anomalies happen.

I'm looking forward to getting a chance to try a Nub (I sent that one in to Oliva, so I am currently Nubless). I expect it to be good though. I'm smoking an Oliva Serie V right now, and loving it. :)

I had originally registered to make that first post, but from the look of the community, I think I'll stick around. It's always good to have more siblings of the leaf to talk to.

Are Nubs easy to attain up there?

The place I normally go has them, but I can only make the trip up there every once in a while. And as a student my budget isn't conducive to buying cigars often (which is part of the reason I go up to New Hampshire. Buying cigars in taxachusetts can be painful). I just bought my fall books, what a racket. I think I'll be able to try a Nub soon though.

I do intend to try all 3 eventually, but I am most interested in the Habano (they all sound good though.)

Well, good luck with getting some Nubs. You might want to show your interest in a Nub bomb, and look into the contests, it might be a free and easy way to get a variety.

Correction! NUBs are easy to get in sothern NH. With Two guys and the one in Londonderry, they have them. But once you get to central or northern NH good luck. No one up this way has them. The two southern shop I mentioned are both 2 hours away.

Nubs are easy to get anywhere you have an internet connection and a place to send them to.

Its not uncommon to see things rolled into cigars. Doesnt make it right, but it happens a lot.

Hmmm, a package from Oliva... what could this be? :)

:D Looks like I'll be trying all 3 wrappers sooner rather than later.

I said it before, but I'm really happy with how Oliva handled this.

The Nubs are resting in my humi right now, in a few days it will be time to try some out.

Awesome, congrats on the score, just another reason to be impressed with the whole Olivia/Nub operation and it's employees.

Based on that I think the plastic was a ticket to a raffle and it looks like you won. Congrats!

If I find a small imperfection in my NUb Mini-Cooper... I'll just let it slide.
