View Full Version : Nub + The Modern Gentleman

The Modern Gentleman

Sweet threads, deep smoke, phat lid, and a dashing bloke...that's what I first saw when Sam stepped onto the rooftop of Maxim Prime in Atlanta. Like his Nub, Gent Leccia is the heart and filet that speaks to you right away. Before a match was struck, a bond was forged. Cut from the same custom tailored cloth, we speak the language of leisure and strive for a life crafted upon boutique pleasures, bespoke experiences, integrity, soulfulness, and style that's always paired with pure substance.

If you think Nub is just about cigars, I'd say the smoke is clouding your judgment. Sam is building a community of likeminded gents and ladies blended together like filler, bound with optimism for a return to civility, and wrapped in a spicy zest for full-bodied life with a lingering finish meant to be savored with fondest friends. Count me in...there's work to be done.

Cats in Atlanta who dig what I'm saying are welcome to stay tuned--Sam and I will be collaborating in the 404 again this autumn at the downtown Ritz-Carlton as part of The Modern Gentleman seminar series.

Tuesday, October 21, 7-9 PM - CARS, CIGARS & 007:
Hand-Made Automobiles, Hand-Rolled Cigars & Boutique Whisky
Nub Cigar founder Sam Leccia rolls cigars and takes us through a tobacco tutorial from filler to binder to wrapper as we hone our techniques for selecting, cutting, toasting, and lighting. We'll also indulge in aged spirits as we juxtapose Bourbon, Canadian, and Scotch whiskies. The evening culminates with a smoke-out in the porte-cochère as we celebrate the return of James Bond with Aston Martin. Discover the nuances of hand-crafted automobiles with an intimate experience astride purring engines of the venerable Vantage and DB9.

Have a here for a news clip of what the MG series is all about:

The Modern Gentleman @ The Ritz-Carlton debuts on Tuesday, September 30 with CORKS & FORKS: Essential Wines & Splendid Pairings. Keep that dial at NubLive for updates as seats become available. Perhaps Sam and I can come up with a jazzy way to offer a Nub-fan or two a pair of tix on us.

It's 8.8.08. Get out on the streets with an octet of sticks...seven friends are waiting.

Inspired fire to all,
Tesauro

Ah Lagavulin. You've named one of the all-time greats...and indeed one of the first single malts that trained my palate upon Scotch. Allow me to tell a story.

Once upon a time in my twenties, a Korean vamp was running the pool table at Crow Bar in DC circa 1994 whilst I hustled games on my slick backgammon board. When she sat down at my table looking for a game, I saw a golden elixir in her glass and smelled the smoke and peat on her mouth.

"What shall we play for?" she asked.

"I was playing for tenspots and martinis," I replied, "but I'll switch to whatever you've got in your glass."

"Let's up the stakes: your place or mine. And it's a Lagavulin 16." She let me taste from her glass. Massive body with soothing warmth and elegant muscle that changed the way I drank whisky forever. Perhaps it was the beguiling Scotch that cost me my concentration. She beat me soundly.

"Your place," she said.

The relationship lasted nearly a year...long enough to learn Islay, Speyside, Highland, and Lowland. Adding to the intrigue is how she ran up a tax debt at the IMF and worked it off by moonlighting in a DC massage parlor. No...I never paid.

Ah, Lagavulin.

Well sir, you a quite the wordsmith, and i applaud you on that. I also share your love for Scotch Whiskey, especially Lagavulin 16. I also enjoy a nice glass of Laphroaig 10 or quarter cask, Bowmore Legend or 12yr for a lighter drink, Ardbeg if i'm craving the heavy peat, and occasionally the Island of Geese blend as a daily drink. I hope to meet you one day, and talk over a glass of Single Malt, preferably Islay, and a cigar, preferably Nub Habano.

Oh, and welcome to the site.

I've been entertained by him, educated by him, downloaded him, read him, watched him on television, and smoked fine cigars with him.

Jason Tesauro has entered the room. Welcome brother!

I hope to attend on Oct 21st. Having participated previously, I know that the gents here are going to love The Modern Gentleman when they get a chance to join you.

Welcome again!

Uncle Dave!
Grand to catch you for kilobyte or two.
The Ritz-Carlton Atlanta is shaping up marvelously...and The R-C Philadelphia just popped on my radar this morning.

I'll drop a line as plans coalesce...meanwhile, love to fam and a twenty-one Nub salute to you and the Oliva gang.

Grazie mille for the kind words. Allow me to return the favor in verse:
It's easy to rave
about the unshakable Dave
who can be counted upon
for the diving glove save.
Like when an evening
was narrowly marred
'cause somebody lost
the box of cigars.
But Dave didn't stress
or care two licks
because this gentleman
always carries spare sticks.

I don't think it's proper
to call a man a diva,
so what's the right
superlative for Mr. Oliva?
Traveling the continent
in word and in deed,
the cigar world's very own
Johnny Appleseed.

If he were a cigar
(ah, to be)
I bet we'd see
less shade more Maduro
and Nicaraguan puro
My judgment may be suspect-o,
but he's damn near perfecto.

Sam, I'm jealous, every year Brian (brcrane) and I, plus a few other friends, head down to Hotlanta for the NOPI Nationals car show in September. This year, NOPI is no more, so I will have to live vicariously through your berfday exploits.
