View Full Version : Other cigars?

I know this is a NUB forum, but I also know you have other cigars you like. What I am looking for is this. I like medium to full bodied cigars. I tend to prefer darker wrapers? Not sure why on that one. I don't want one that will knock me out to hard. The NUB Habano is a good example of about as strong as I can smoke.

Give me some names in the $5.00-10.00 per stick or cheaper would be good. I don't wanna break the bank.

Thanks in advance all, Beale.

the padron numbers series were the first cigar I really, really liked, the 2000 or the 3000 depending on what size smoke you want

and Oliva (mother company of Nub) is making some great cigars as well, and different cigars from the nub, the Serie O, G and V all have great cigars in the lines

I like the CAO Brazilia Box Press ($5 - $7), La Flor Dominicana Dbl. Ligero line ($5 - $7), Oliva Serie V, and I'll let you know after I try the Oliva Serie O Maduro Dbl. Toros that should arrive today. I too am a "bargain smoker" who prefers good quality at a low price. :-)

Oliva makes some great cigars. The Serie 'O' and 'G' also have a Maduro line if you like darker cigars (I love maduro cigars :) ). Im a big fan of the 'G' Maduro Belicoso. Its a nice medium bodied smoke. And ofcourse the Serie 'V' which is one of my favourite cigars, yummy, but is quite full bodied. Its not smack you in the face full, it kinda creeps up on ya. It does with me anyway lol :D

CAO also make some great cigars, I really like the L'anniversaire Maduro, CX2, Italia, America and Brazilia. Altho the last 2 are alittle more full bodied.

there are a ton of great cigars you can get for up to $10, so many you may never even need to spend more than $10

until you leave the country and get your hands on a #2 which just ruins things for awhile because it changes your expectations for $17

A go-to cigar for me when I want consistency and don't want to be let down is the Punch Royal Coronation (either maduro or EMS, both are great). Damn near everyone I've had was covered in bloom and smoked like a dream. The other cigars in the Deluxe line are great too, but that little corona is soooo good.

Other well priced cigars from General I like are the Hoyo/Punch Rothschilds (first premium cigar I like and smoked regularly was the Hoyo Roth maduro), any size Excalibur (bang for the buck, the best cigar out there), La Gloria Cubana, and Don Tomas Cameroons. I also found a box of the creamiest Temple Hall Estates 550 maduros in the warehouse at Klafters that had to be 3 years old. The smoke had such a soft mouth feel that I was blown away.

Armenia... OK then, I second the RASS, Partegas and Monte (not that I would know).
Also, if you want to try an awesome full body cigar from the same region, try the BBF (bolivar Belicosos Finos)... again, not that I would know :P

These are the cigars I prefer: La Finca, Juan Lopez, Gispert Maduro, CAO Maduro and Extreme, Oliva, Acids (Blue and Gold bands), Cuba Libre, Don Tomas, Sancho Panza, Sosa, Savinelli, SLR, RP Fusion, Perdomo2 (when it was available) Padron, Montecruz Negra Cubana (when it was available) El Sol (Tampa, FL brand), Angel 100% (when it was available) and Gurhka G3.

I prefer the maduro as opposed to the oscuro though.

I had a Drew Estate Java Maduro Robusto last night while sipping on some Bowmore Legend Single Malt Scotch, and enjoying a piece of dark Chocolate. They all complimented each other quite well. The Java was very smooth, with just a touch of the mocha flavor, and was a nice way to cap off a long evening of drinking and hanging out with my buddies. It's not something I would smoke often but it is something nice to keep on those occasions when i want just a hint of flavor, or when there's a crowd of non-smokers, as the resulting scent is rather pleasant.

brilliant

it isnt often enough people think to pair dark chocolate and cigars

the wife an I are beg fans of a few $8 and more dark chocolate bars, most from Italy, and it's always happy with a nice maduro

I often like to pair food, drink and cigars. I brew beer, and a lot of the time I try to make meals that help compliment the flavors of the beer. Same goes with Wine, and various liquors. For instance, I quite enjoy a grilled steak, a glass of red wine (I prefer Linganore's Black Raven or Bacioni) and I'll follow it with some dark chocolate and port, or a sweeter scotch like Bowmore, and a cigar that's very smooth, perhaps slightly flavored like the Drew Estate Java. I can think of no better way to enjoy all the delicious flavors that I love all in one extended sitting.

I'm curious about the dark chocolate you speak of, what brands are they, I would love to try them out.

I actualy dont always pay attention to the brank, I shop by country of leaf origin, and country of mfg (this almost sounds familiar . . . )

there is a fantastic chocolate store (not so much a chocolatier, because you go more to purchase already made chocolate as opposed to their chocolate) in town, I try to just buy something different and pick a country every time, shopping by percentage as well, 75% is too strong for my taste, but the wife doesnt mind

here is the site, I cant remember any brands off-hand, but I will update you as I can

if you have a foo-foo grocery store nearby they will have at least a few bars you can buy by percentage, but not the selection this place has, maybe if you even call or email them they can recommend a similar store near you

Interesting... Dark chocolate is used by whisk(e)y tasters to clear their pallet between drinks.
The darker the better. I find that almost any 75% or higher cocoa content works great. I love the 85's.

The darker and more bitter the better for me. It's the same with just about everything, my coffee, beer, wine, etc. I'll check the organic store I frequent, i'm sure they have something for my taste. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Hey Steelertrav. I smoked an Excalibur this past weekend. It was an excelent smoke. Very smmoth and firm. It was a huge cigar. Was on the deck for over an hour of very enjoyable smoking. Thanks for the tip.

Well, so far i've smoked two of my cigars from the CI tasters pack. One was the Rocky Patel REO, the other was the 5 Vegas Classic. The Rockey Patel burned nicely, but the draw was way too easy for my liking. It was so loosely packed, and I found (as did Brian when he smoked his REO) that there seemed to be periods in which the taste suddenly got bitter. The flavor wasn't anything to write home about, and I don't think I'll ever purchase another. I've heard a lot of lackluster reviews of RP, so I probably won't go out and buy any, but if they happen to come in another tasters pack, I'll gladly smoke it in the hopes that they're not all bad.
The 5 Vegas was much better. It too burned nice and even, never went out, and the draw was much better, although still a little easier than i prefer. The flavor had a nice peppery and earthy taste, and mellowed out to a nice smooth yet bold flavor. I would buy more, but I still have my other Torpedo from the tasters pack, and a sampler from a CI freebie. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, this got a '90' rating, so I'm not the only one that enjoys it.

Yea, the REO was probably one of the "oddest" smokes I have ever had. After I initially lit it, I wasnt impressed with it. The draw was way too loose, and the taste was borderline gross. The closest I can equate it to, is it mildly tasted the way mothballs smell. I thought it was strange and pushed forward, and the taste changed. It smoothed out and was a relaxing smoke for a bit and then out of no where that "mothball" taste came back again. I put it out before I hit the band.

Last weekend I had an Olivia V torp, which couldnt have burned and tasted anymore more perfect...and tonight I have an Unbanded torp that was sent to me by a friend, and when I asked what it was his response was "smoke it and give me an honest review...and Ill tell ya". ISOM? The world may never know.

When introduced they were named by the rollers "Bruce Lee" (I still have some with that written on the cello). I asked why, the guys at CFO said: "because it will kick your butt!" Other names included the Lobotomizer.
It turns out that fresh this cigar is explosive but mellows real nice with age. It is FULL boddied, tons of flavor and just plain delicious.
It is one of my top 5 cigars (not counting Nubs of course!)

I just smoked a CAO 'VR' and I must say, it was a very enjoyable smoke. It started out a bit 'peppery' but mellowed out a tad and it had a lot of flavor but kept it's smooth profile. It has a nice, dark, oily maduro wrapper, which they say adds 'a hefty dose of rich-sweet flavor'. I agree it added a rich flavor, but can't quite say i agree with the 'sweet' aspect. It does have a bit of a leathery character which i enjoyed. I drank a glass of Lagavulin 16yr aged Single Malt Islay Scotch. They definitely balanced each other out. The intense peat and oaky flavors of the Scotch helped mellow out the cigar and brought out the smoothness and the rich flavors of the maduro wrapper. I recommend the pair, or at least the 'VR' if you're not a fan of Scotch.

I just smoked a 5 Vegas Classic Torpedo, and it was delish! I just got back from a 4 mile run, had some friends over, and decided to light it up. It was very smooth and creamy, burned evenly, great draw, light earthy flavors, and it has worked it's way into my list of favorites. Great for relaxing on the deck with a Fresca and Vodka.

Also, i forgot to mention about the Nub 358 Habano I smoked yesterday, but I had a Blue Moon with it (and a Shiner) and they rather complimented each other nicely. It was a typical hot, humid Maryland summer day and the cigar really helped bring out the orange and coriander in the beer. At the same time, the beer helped smooth out the cigar a little, giving it a whole new flavor and it helped bring out some of the nutty flavors as well. If you like Blue Moon, give it a shot.

You must be some kind of hardcore, Mav. After I run, I can't do much of anything past breathing and consuming serious amounts of water.

Also, if you ever get across the pond, I had the pleasure of snagging some cubans while I was in Italy. Pretty sure the brand was Partagas, but I was lookin at a different label, the one that said "100% Tabaca Cubana" very delicious if you can get your hands on one

Acids can take a lot of flak from some "hardcore" smokers, and even I had issues with them years ago
but I have to say, I am impressed with the quality of work Drew Estate puts out, they use good tobaccos(or if they dont, their aging process magically makes it good) and they have great construction
I am also a big fan of the kuba kuba, but the cigarillos are what I but for quick smokes, when I used to buy backwoods for tailgating or a quick winter drinking cigar when forced to be outside

I smoked a ton of Nubs while in Aruba (I even have a picture of a Nub Stand on the beach in the screaming Aruba trade winds just as the wind began to knock it over (in a camera that is yet still unpacked).
But in a very upscale cigar bar I lit up an Opus and man, they thought I was smoking gold. Everyone else was smoking Cubans.
