I am somehow surprised when I hear people don't know about Anejo rum. Like scotch, 90% of the rum manufactured is for mixing. It never sees any barrels, therefore isn't aged. It contains questionable additives, but when mixed 8 to 1 with a can of coke, it's OK.
There is a whole other realm of rum. It is distilled from the finest and purest ingredients, fermented to perfection, then distilled to extract to soul or spirit or alcohol, then barrel aged for years so the alcohol can absorb the tastes and nuances of the various woods used. This is Anejo rum. It tastes nothing like the rum you mix with your cokes and pineapple juices. It is for sipping and tastes more like congnac than anything else.
My favorites include
Ron Zacappa (23 years old)
Ron Pampero (8 years old)
& even the 8 y/o Bacardi is a nice way to introduce yourself into this finner world of rums.
You should be able to get them for around $35, $30, $25 respectively.

Sounds interesting. I have a Jamaican friend that is trying to get me into aged rums. I'll have to give it a try.

The best rum I have ever had is the Havana Club 3 anos from cuba, not that knock off crap that Barcardi sells under the Havana Club name

Ive been meaning to try bacardi 8 for awhile, want to try a rum that is tolerable to drink on the rocks, dont want to go farther until I find out if I can handle rum alone or I just want to make hurricanes to get myself and my friends hammered

Skip got me hooked on Ron Zacappa.
And what about that Padron coffee infused tequila? Skip got me hooked on that too!

My wife used to put the Padron over vanillia ice cream. I say used because once we ran out...she started using Ron Zacappa 15 year.

I have had some great rums in my life. But the best one Is one I can't remember the name of. I had it over at a friends house and it something like $50 a bottle. This rum was not for mixing, it was for slow pleasure.

Marc Schneiderman (a local legend) gave me dram of a sipping rum that he got in cuba (not the pedestrian Havana Club, of which I have a bottle and is quite good, but something much harder to find and infinitely more precious). I've never had such a good rum! My brother brought back some Appleton Estate (don't remember which one exactly) from his trips to Jamaica which was quite good as well.

cuban rum can be harsh, the rums from south & central america are incredible. It seems the further south you go the sweeter they get.

I only got introduced to rum a couple months ago. Had some Havana Club at a herf and boy was it good! Never had it before that. Looking to try some different kinds now.

I usually drink Flor de Cana rum when I smoke. I recently had Sailor's Jerry but didn't care for it. At this past Saturday's CAO event, I tried Vizcaya rum for the first time. The next time I go rum shopping, I have to get a bottle of Vizcaya rum.
