I live on the water & have a boat, it's called the MEGABYTE. I just got her back from dry dock and I've been spending a few hours each night prepping her for the maiden voyage. Tonight I felt like having a cigar while stowing all sorts of safety equipment (flairs, PFDs, etc etc). I chose a Cameroon Nub. I thoroughly enjoyed this cigar until it was time to go in. As is usually the case when I'm done with my cigar I just toss it into the ocean. Tonight was no different. I took one last long puff then tossed it over my shoulder. The thing is, the nub & it's awesome ring size has quite a bit of ember on it. When that puppy hit the water it extinguished with a sound I never heard before. It was borderline a mini explosion as the hot tip hit the water and rapidly converted a bit of it to steam before giving up the ghost. It was remarkable so I thought I would remark.

Please forgive my treehuggerness, but could you please put that thing in the trash instead of launching it into the sea? Thanks.

HAHAHA... A tree-hugging cigar smoker.
Well, I only burn around 15 gallons per hour at 22 knots. Most of my trips run around 60 to 80 nautical miles which I tend to do every weekend. That's about 60 gallons (somehow usually eds up being closer to 70). At $5 per gallon that's $300 per week.
now, because I buy my rotting dinosaur remains (oil) on the water, there is a 15% tax that goes to the conservation and protection of our coastlines and wildlife. Figuring I fish close to 40 weekends per year that's around $2,000 per year towards tree-hugging. & that does not include the 15% excise tax on my equipment. (& I've been doing this for over 30 years).
How much did you donate last year?
Oh, here's another tidbit. If I didn't fish (& smoke cigars) I'd be a raving lunatic and who knows I may burn down a forest one year, so there's that to consider too :P

"Treehugger" is a nickname I've been given by some of our BOTL because I live in Colorado. I do my recycling and cycling, but I do drive a gas guzzling F250 as well, so I'm really not too much of a treehugger. (I can't stand Al Gore either.;) ) That being said, and the fact I live in Colorado, 90% of our annual fires are caused by our fellow B/SOTL from tossing their butts and nubs out the window. Yeah, I know you're on a sea going vessel surrounded by water, but it's still my initial reaction.
Also, thanks for taking my initial grumpy comment with a grain of salt. I've had my morning coffee now and feel better.

Here in NY on the water or the concrete jungle, hard to start any sort of fire without some sort of accelerant (OK, now I'm on the FBI watch list... again).
