View Full Version : Habaons split head to foot

Hi, Sam.

I recently ordered several NUb boxes from Cigars International, and there seems to be something gone awry either in production, distribution or maybe CI shipping, because half of the NUbs are completely split from head to foot before they even come out of the celo. It's been a disappointment, because the flavors are great, but literally half are not smokable.

I just wanted to provide you a little feedback for your investigation.

Wow, that sucks. Did you contact CI? They usually make good on that kinda stuff.

sounds like the fed ex guy did a number on your cigars. I have had several boxes worth and haven't had a problem yet.

I will look into this.

I have yet to have a problem and i smoke anywhere from 5-10 nubs a day. I haven't heard anything from any of our retailers either...As fast as these are selling, I'm thinking it is a humidity problem due to shipping from Nicaragua, then to Miami, then to CI, then to the customer... I would imagine that it is difficult for them to stay at the same humidity level through all of that travel time.

They will make good on the boxes if you call in... sorry to hear about your loss. I too had problems with CI earlier last year (since then not really used them), but all problems wore corrected or replaced.

I am trying to work it out with the folks at Cigars International. The process is more than a little confusing with them, and I don't know that I will be using them in the future. 22 of the 75 I ordered were split to one degree or another...mostly habanos versus connecticut.

I have had many issues with cigars from CI. I question their storage methods... but I have no proof.
I would suggest anyone buying any cigars mail-order should consider the US postal service is not a humidor. It is not unreasonable for cigars shipped on a Friday to spend a weekend in a hot truck or actually reach temperatures below freezing. And this says nothing of humidity (speaking of which, you all should remember that humidity we all concern ourselves with is actually relative humidity-relative to temperature!). So, if you order cigars mail-order let them rest in a comfy well maintained humidor for at least a week or more to undo anything that may have happened in shipping. Of course if your source abused the cigars then it will need more than 2 weeks and the wrapper still may fracture form being rehydrated too rapidly.
For my hard earned $, I will buy my nubs form a store I am familiar with or CFO. I've been there and the entire store is a humidor. Even the shipping department. The only chance a cigar form CFO will have to dry out is in transit.

That would be great if Nubs were available anywhere in the St. Louis MO metro area.

That does suck bro--we're working through our second shipment and not a bad NUB in the bunch.

I bought 2 five packs of Nub Habano's from CI. Although every one I've smoked was perfect, two I gave away literally exploded about 1-2 inches in.

I think with rest they would have been OK. Possibly they were too wet(?) and need to sit a month or two.

We got a box of Habanos from CI when they were first released, and we had the same spliting wrapper problem. The first one just totally exploded pretty quick. We decided to let em sit and hope for them to settle. But the 2nd one a week ago also cracked/split on us. Maybe as said above they hydrated/dehydrated too quickly. Sucks, especially since (as also mentioned above) postal service did who knows what with them. Other stuff we've gotten from CI has had no problems like this.

The saga with Cigars International continues. I sent back 17 that were cracked. After about 3 weeks, I received 13 replacements? Not understanding their math, I contacted them again. Now they are claiming they received 13. Not sure how they might explain 4 disappearing from a single box in transit. I just don't feel good at all about the Cigars International experience and I won't be ordering from them again. Every other B&M and online that I have dealt with would fix the problem as quickly as they could without errors or hassle. Lesson learned. Everyone else: you are forewarned in dealing with Cigars International.

not to say you were wrong, but Im not sure I would have even sent the cigars back

I would not have been willing to pay for postage, even if reimbursed
ad I may have just taken a nice hi-res digital picture and mailed it

but hindsight is 20/20

well I think the saga is wrapping up. CI indicated that they will send the other 4. As for not sending them back, they refused to replace with the return. Seems to add cost versus a photo, but that was their only option (maybe they are worried about people doctoring photos).

My first 6 NUBS, 2 each in 460, I had all but the Connecticuts split. They were purchased from CI or Cigars.com, I forget which. I brought this up at the Richmond event with the Oliva rep there and he said they split from being too moist. The people I bought them from shipped with a water pillow and I smoked them within two weeks. He said that shippers often over saturate shipments so they will not dry out and if smoked before they stabilize, that can cause splitting. He suggested letting them stabilize for at least a month in the humidor before smoking if splitting really bothers you. He said the NuBs they brought to the event were also slightly over moist because they were being hauled around in the trailer where the heat could really dry them out so he suggested I let them set for a month. Well, I couldn't wait that long but I did wait for three weeks and none that I have smoked have split.

I have had two 466 Habanos split but only at the foot (minimal) and they still smoked just fine.

I haven't had a problem and I do let mine sit in my humi for a while to get adjusted. However, I have heard people talk about some splitting every now & then.

I had the same problem with 1 or 2 that I purchased at a NUB event but think maybe it was due to my not letting them rest a bit before torching one. So now they are resting in the humi and have been since June and will try one in a few weeks to see what happens.I have sent a few bombs, PIF and the people that received them have not had any issues to my understanding---I would pull 1 or 2 form the box and keep the rest in the cello until your humi stabilizes for a month or 2--my 2c.

I have had a cammi split pretty bad, but I smoked it pretty soon after getting it and thats a thin wrapper to start with.

As far as CI goes I have never had a problem with anything I have bought with them. And I'm glad that they did you right even if it did take a little doing. The thing I don't like about them is all the speical stuff they make that you can only get there. Never liked any of that stuff that I have tired.

I just ordered my box from CI and everything was fine, the shipment came with two water pillows in an opened plastic bag, ( i know this doesnt keep everything at perfect RH but i can imagine it helps) they all went straight into the humi, i've smoked 3 since then without any problems. I do however make sure to order by Monday or Tuesday to garauntee that my order won't be sitting in a shipping truck over the weekend... sorry to hear about your misfortune with CI but i guess it's a risk we all take by ordering blindly from online retailers...
