View Full Version : Question about cracked wrappers

Purchased several Nubs from cigar.com. I had one come in with a small (0.75") crack in the wrapper, first time I've ever had a cigar come in with a crack. I didn't think much of it, just figured that it goes with having to have cigars shipped. However, I've smoked four nubs (two Habanos, two Connecticut) and three of the four have had large (1"+) cracks in the wrappers 10 minutes after lighting. Is this common with Nubs?

I would say they need time in your humidor to adjust. Seems like the humidity is off and they are more then likely a bit dry.

I think in order for me to make sure my theory is correct I need you to send 1 of each wrapper to me and I will absorb any shipping cost.
Like Duece I think it may have something to do with the travel and getting them back to their normal RH---So let em rest for a week or two in the humi at 70%--PeacE!

this can also happen when they are too wet 75%+ the drastic change from too wet to dry (the flame) can cause splits in the wrapper, give them humi time, or if you are in a rush to smoke them, drybox them for a week or so, cigar.com tends to ship stuff a little bit wet

yup.
And if this is the first time you've seen this happen.. well, you are either incredibly lucky or new to this game. I've been smoking cigars for almost 35 years now and some of my best and favorite sticks have had this happen form time to time.

Thanks for the info guys. My first thought was the humidity, but the Nubs have been in my box since 4/3/2008 so I thought they would have leveled out by now (box is at 70%). I'll give them another couple weeks and try again.

I would try dropping your humidity to around the mid 60's range. I have had great luck storing my cigars at this level. Seems to help prevent most cracking and draw problems. Also you may want to calibrate your hygrometer to see if it is accurate. Check out this link (http://www.cigarlive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10203&highlight=calibrate+hygrometer)for information regarding calibrating.

Ah, some are not bad. I like the CAO odyssey's, Don Carlos, and La Aurora 1495. I got a Cammy shark that I cant decide whether to smoke or not. Lookin forward to that one at some point.

ooooh, the illustrious cammy shark....I typically do not enjoy Cammy's that much, but the Nub was pretty good, if I must say so...

Actually the Odyssey is an Ecuadorian Rosado and the 1495 is a sun grown Corojo.
I've been enjoying cameroon more recently. Trying to find cigars that taste more like the Cameroon in Fuente Hemingways. The closest so far was a Cuesta Rey Stanford's Cameroon Reserve. Pretty tastey.
