View Full Version : What is Nub?

A former Oliva Cigar Co. sales rep has created a cigar innovation that is creating tremendous buzz. The rep is Sam Leccia, he covered Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania for Oliva since 2004. Sam came from the liquor industry where he even was a partner in an award winning vodka.

After learning how to roll cigars in Esteli, Nicaragua and experimenting in his garage,
Sam created “nubs”. A concept that seeks to deliver only that most enjoyable part of the cigar. Dedicated to the theory that a cigar finds its “sweet spot” at the 3 ½- 4 inch point, Sam started from there. All “nub” cigars must exist within this window. No “nub” is longer than 4 inches. Further adding to this complex theory, Sam has made the ring gauges ranging from 56-66. The result is a range of smokes that have the same amount of tobacco as any Churchill or even Presidente. Unbelievably, they also smoke as long.

Sam brought Jose Oliva the concept mid 2007. After hearing the sizes the no-nonsense Oliva Family was more than skeptical. The idea of a 4x60 or 4x66 sounded like a novelty to them. It was not until the family was able to see and smoke them that they understood
that this was no novelty. They realized that there in fact was something that had not been done in this business. It is truly an innovation which has the ability to have one revisit wrappers that they may have had long since formed opinions about. Understanding that not everyone is in love with large ring gauges, you have to first grasp the theory of “nub” because in the world of “nubs” a 60 is not a large ring gauge. The only real way to understand it is to smoke one. The cigar starts at the sweet spot and gets better from there. The large ring gauge allows for a dense ash which insulates the cigar keeping it cool as you smoke. The large amount of smoke also allows you to really enjoy the complex flavors.

Sam’s excitement really grew on the Oliva’s as they began to experiment with the concept. After hundreds of sizes and samples they felt ready to support the project. While the cigar is made and distributed by Oliva, it will be promoted by the man who knows it best, Sam Leccia.

The cigar will be launched in three wrappers: Habano, Cameroon, and Connecticut. There will be three sizes shared by all wrappers plus an additional size which is unique to each wrapper. The flavor range is from mild to full but always complex and hearty.

Sam, sounds like the concept is Very well thought out. I am curious about maduro wrapper. I am thinking no maduro, as it would have changed the characteristics of the burn. Is this right or am I off-base?

seems like a novelty sure, but most novelties taste like crap. The NUb is more of a revolution in taste

WOW, after reading that, I'm ready to NUB. I like the size to tobacco ratio, and the burn time is great.

I like it. I've had Nat Sherman Bankers before, and the experience is one that needs to be explored. A lot. What a place to start! I always liked that vitola, but Nubs will be even shorter. I think I'm gonna like this!

So what IS the sweet spot on tobacco? As a small-time roller myself, I'd appreciate the inside line ;)

Oh ya...my birthday is March 25. Is there any way I can buy a few of these prior to their release? It'd make a great B-day smoke I am sure!

Well, I gotta tell ya, when I saw the first pictures of the nub, I was intrigued. My Uncle Paul used to refer to it as the "Gourmet Zone"... to have a cigar that was ONLY the Gourmet Zone... I was skeptical, but eager to try one out. And I am very happy to say that from the instant I lit up my first HabaNUB 4x60, it was everything promised. About the only issure I take with the theory is that it is hard for me to make one last any longer than about 45 minutes. However, as I've gotten used to smoking them, I've actually made one last a solid hour. And really, they last plenty long enough as is. A thouroughly enjoyable smoke. Thanks Sam!

One of the things I love about cigars is seeing how the taste develops. I've often found that the "gourmet zone" is in the middle of the cigar, not always the end.

Regardless, it seems to me all we are really talking about is a short cigar. So the whole NUB concept is lost on me.

I rarely chase the latest "hot" thing, as they often fizzle. So sans one of my friends on THH gifting me one, I'm not likely to try it...double that on the fact I rarely smoke anything that isn't maduro.

Seems NUB is getting a lot of fans and that is good stuff, but I've got this heavy Pavlovian skepticism ingrained into my psyche
