The Modern Gentleman

Gentlemen,
That you've ended up at Nub.com speaks to your commitment to civil vice. Good work. In a society that begrudges us our leisure, cigars and whiskey, cocktails and woo, live tunes and late-night mischief are some of the last bastions of an evolved man's cool. I've devoted my adult life (and likely half my adolescence) to these pursuits and I invite you to join me in this gentlemanly renaissance.

“Peculiar, brilliant, funny, smart, and it will turn you into a cool person.” -- Augusten Burroughs, author of Running With Scissors and Dry

“Completely hysterical and shockingly useful.” -- Entertainment Weekly

Boom times may be behind us for a spell, but we've all go to eat. And while we're doing so, why not integrate a beautiful meal with a smashing experience and education that accelerates your sophistication? Since 2005, I've been hosting gents-only seminars that bring artisanal wine/beer/spirits/cigars/clothes directly to you for an evening that blends a full line-up of splendid food and libations with a killer night out and the chance to meet fellow cool cats.

Check this out for a snippet of what it's all about: MG @ The Ritz-Carlton video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JymJgm7L8Hc).

"Offers a thorough set of instructions on how to function as a refined member of today's society." -- Maxim

STICKS & STONES: Cigar How-tos and Whiskey Wherefores
Tuesday, October 21, 7-9 PM - $135
Robusto or perfecto? Neat or on the rocks? Oliva Cigar's Dave Wagner and Nub Cigar founder Sam Leccia roll cigars and take us through a tobacco tutorial from filler to binder to wrapper as we hone our techniques for selecting, cutting, toasting, and lighting. Juxtapose Bourbon, Scotch, and Canadian whiskies while sipping Maker's Mark (http://www.makersmark.com/Home.aspx), Black Maple Hill (http://www.coolhunting.com/archives/2008/08/black_maple_hil.php), and The Balvenie (http://www.balvenie.com/), plus Crown Royal's Special Reserve (http://www.crownroyal.com/special-reserve/about/), Cask 16 (http://www.crownroyal.com/cask/about/), and the vaunted XR (http://www.crownroyal.com/xr/about/). The evening culminates with a smoke-out in the porte-cochère.

THE SWORDSMAN: Champagne Sabering & the Art of Carving
Tuesday, November 18, 7-9 PM - $135
Just in time for Thanksgiving, guests learn once and for all the proper art of carving. Executive Chef Yves Samake (http://corporate.ritzcarlton.com/en/Press/Properties/Atlanta/Releases/YVES+SAMAKE+RETURNS+TO+THE+SOUTH+AS+EXECUTIVE+CHEF .htm) guides us, knife in hand, as we each carve a bird, learn to prepare autumnal side dishes, and break bread Ritz-Carlton style. Continuing in the cutlery spirit, we'll make like Napoleon's cavalry and perfect the impressive feat of Champagne sabering (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ9jJ6WmjHo) as each gent beheads his own bottle of Frank Family Vineyards 1997 Signature Brut (http://www.frankfamilyvineyards.com/index.jsp).

FIZZ & FLASH: Top-shelf Cocktails & Bespoke Tailoring

Why is a proper martini stirred and not shaken? Ace the bar exam as Tesauro highlights vintage cocktails and modern mixology with artisanal spirits: Pinky Vodka (http://www.pinkyvodka.com/), Gin No. 209 (http://www.209gin.com/), Don Diego Santa Tequila, and Ron Zacapa Rum (http://www.ronesdeguatemala.com/). Polish your bartending skills with classics like the Blue Moon and Yellow Parrot. And with Philip Martin of John H. Daniel Co. (http://www.johnhdaniel.com/) (custom clothiers to Tiger Woods and makers of The Masters green jacket), we'll explore the secrets of tailored suits from collars to cufflinks.

Whether you're a wooing suitor or a spouse celebrating a sweetheart, you need to be armed with a nose for whimsy, a taste for titillations, and an eye for the extraordinary. Advice from Tiffany & Co. And let me throw a log on the fire.

Sam and I are pleased to offer two complimentary tickets to STICKS & STONES. Why bother with a lottery, a raffle, or a trivia question when we can resort that age-old method...the limerick contest. Of course, you must incorporate Nub in there somewhere. One winner will be selected by Sam & I and the other will be based upon Nub Live replies.

Sorry, no airfare, but if you get yourself to Atlanta, we'll show you a helluva time. Here's one off the top of my head.

There once was a man from Dublin,
whose unused member was mightly troublin.
So when a pretty girl said "hey thar,"
and stuck out her hand, "got an extra seegar?"
He just smiled extra big and stuck his Nub in.

Perhaps one day, but alas I cannot afford the cost or time right now. I hope to one day evolve my gentleman status with the aid of these seminars.

It must contain "Nub" and can't contain "Nantucket"?
Did I get that right?

Indeed, that's the price per head. And let me add that besides the bevy of boutique booze, you'll be brilliantly fed, deftly led, and sent home to bed with some marvelous sticks.

And while I'm on the rhyme...

There once was a chap named Bogey
who devoured Bacall like a hoagie
but when asked if he loved sticks
as much as Hollywood's chicks
He said "I'd trade two starlets for a stogie."

The hotel was filled with self-doubt,
Then arose two men with much clout,
With scotch and a Nub in their hands,
they sipped and smoked to the bands,
That's what the Modern Gentleman is about!

There once was a handsome young bloke
Out to create the very best smoke
Focused on the spot they call sweet
He finally accomplished his feat
Thanks to Sam a sleeping palate awoke

or

There once was a rebellious young bloke
Out to create the very best smoke
Told that size doesn't matter
He made that bitch fatter
Now Sam has the last f***in' joke!
